Policy for the Award of Scholarships

Academic Year 2011-2012

The Langley Manor Preparatory School is a vibrant, co-educational, independent day school in Langley for primary school children aged 3 to 11. We offer an excellent academic education with a focus on individual learning opportunities, as well as access to a wide programme of music, drama, sport and art.

In recognition of the opportunities at The Langley Manor Preparatory School, CfBT Education Trust, the owners of the school, are pleased to offer Scholarships to new pupils joining the school in Years 1 3 for the first time to ensure that as many children as possible are able to take advantage of the excellent education on offer. Scholarships are usually awarded through some form of open competition for academic excellence or exceptional talent in art, drama, music or sport.

All Scholarships are awarded on merit and in accordance with the procedure outlined in the Scholarships Policy.

The Scholarships are open to external candidates who may apply for an Academic Scholarship for entry into Years 1 3.  The number offered will vary depending on the quality and circumstances of the candidates and the available budget. CfBT Education Trust, as Governors of the school, will make the decision on any scholarship award, and their decision will be final. The school reserves the right not to award a Scholarship if the quality of applicants is low.

A Scholarship:

  • Is awarded to a pupil in recognition of their academic achievement and potential, and will be assessed following the entrance examination, Scholarship interview and report from their current school;
  • Is open to all eligible non-Langley Manor pupils;
  • Is normally awarded to pupils entering Years 1 3 in September 2011;
  • Is usually expressed as a percentage of the academic fees and can be up to 30% of the standard school fees;
  • Is normally granted for as long as the pupil remains at the school until the end of Year 6

Scholarship Selection Criteria

The candidate will have achieved one of the highest scores in one or more of the entrance assessments and will have impressed the panel at interview. The assessment will consist of Assessments in Literacy and Numeracy that will provide an opportunity for candidates to use their knowledge, imagination and creativity.

All Scholarships granted are non-negotiable. The school will not enter into any discussion with the parents of unsuccessful candidates regarding the allocation of a scholarship. For academic scholarships, parents will receive a summary of their child’s results in the various papers.  However, marked papers will be retained by the school and the school is unable to provide detailed comments on each candidate’s performance in a given paper.

An annual review of all existing scholarships takes place. The continuation of a scholarship from year to year depends upon each scholar making good, consistent progress and the school reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship award if the pupil fails to maintain high standards in work, effort and behaviour.
