Langley Manor pupils in class

Reading and writing open up a child’s whole world. We ensure that reading, comprehension and expressive writing are taught and learned thoroughly by using a combination of reading schemes backed up by a phonics-based scheme for teaching spelling and sounds.

We aim to achieve a reading age at least two years ahead of a child’s chronological age.

We renew our resources regularly recently purchasing a new reading scheme which the children love. The Oxford Reading Tree scheme forms the core of our reading but it is supplemented extensively with other books to encourage the children to read extensively.

There is an emphasis on the basic components of good writing-grammar,vocabulary, spelling and punctuation which ensures that all children write at a very high level.
